Abstract
Discussions are presented concerning the absorptive part W of the optical potential for heavy ion reactions at near- and sub-barrier energies. Particularly, the information obtained from simultaneous analyses of elastic and fusion cross section data is presented, showing that the fusion part of W should have an appreciable value in the Coulomb barrier region, and thus cause a substantial absorption there. This contradicts assumptions made in all coupled-channel calculations performed in the past. Information obtained for the direct reaction part of W, as well as the real potential are also discussed.
