Abstract

The visible and UV spectra γ-irradiated films of polyvinyl chloride doped or coated with perylene were recorded. These films were irradiated either under a vacuum, in N2 O or in NH3. In the case of a film the surface of which has been coated with perylene, an absorption maximum at 560 mμ was observed. When the same film was irradiated in N2 O, this absorption maximum was also observed. However, when it was irradiated in NH3, this absorption maximum was not observed. In the case of a film in which perylene has been dissolved, this 560 mμ absorption maximum was not observed, either. As the absorption maximum at 560 mμ coincided with that of perylene cation already reported, it was concluded that the perylene cation forms only on the surface of a film of polyvinyl chloride. As the absorption of the energy of the γ-ray takes place on the surface of the film at the same rate, per electron density, as that inside the film, it was concluded that the stabilization of the perylene cation, the precursors of which c...
