Abstract

ABSTRACT An analysis of gas absorption by a single stationary growing droplet with subsequent chemical reaction is presented. The governing partial differential equations for droplet growth by condensation of a vapor, and the vapor, absorbed gas and reaction product concentration distributions have been solved numerically by a finite element collocation technique. By means of a parametric study the effects of droplet growth, reversible as well as irreversible reaction, gas phase mass transfer and physical solubility of the absorbed gas on the absorption are elucidated. The results are compared with those for a non-growing droplet under identical conditions, and indicate that the combined effect of droplet growth and chemical reaction is to enhance the absorption over and above the enhancement due to chemical reaction or droplet growth alone.
