Paul Abstract The equations which govern the response of a viscous, compressible fluid to an incident gravitational wave are derived in the linearized approximation to general relativity. For a fluid in static equilibrium, this response depends on inhomogeneities in the coefficient of shear viscosity and appears as a sound wave and as a shear wave which heats surface layer.
