Abstract

The ability of the baboon vagina and cervix to absorb antibodies was studied by measuring luteinizing hormone (LH) estrogen and progestin l evels after the intravaginal instillation of bovine milk immunoglobulin (Ig) (1 gm immunoglobulin/day). Daily treatment resulted in a significant (p less than .01) decrease in mean peak serum LH and progestin levels. The administration of anti-LH did not affect the mean peak estrogen level. There was no apparent effect of control antibodies on LH estrogen or progestin levels in 2 animals studied. The immunological response was confirmed by serological tests in 6 of 9 animals as evidenced by the appearance of antibodies against bovine immunoglobulin. The results emphasize that extreme caution should be taken when introducing potentially toxic or antigenic compounds into the vagina for therapeutic prophylactic or hygienic purposes.
