Abstract

Absorption coefficients of ultrasonic compressional waves in polystyrene and Plexiglas sheets were measured for use in model experiments of elastic wave propagation. A pulsed sinusoidal wave of variable frequency was used. In the frequency range of 30 to 200 kc/sec, the relations between the absorption coefficient α (Np/cm) and frequency f (kc/sec) were found to be approximated by α=7.3×10−5 f1.4 for polystyrene, and α=0.054 log f−0.080 for Plexiglas.
