Abstract
The light absorption of cholesteric films in the Grandjean texture is theoretically studied. Calculations are reported for two sets of refractive indices (1.77, 1.53 and 1.50, 1.40), two ratios of pitch to wavelengths (p/λ=3, p/λ=2), and various strengths of dichroism. A numerical procedure is employed for an accurate treatment of the angular dependence of absorption. The data are used to calculate the angular dependence of brightness and contrast for reflective dichroic display devices that are based on switching between Grandjean and pseudoisotropic textures.
