Abstract

A constantly operating, long, straight wave maker in a ripple tank produces waves whose amplitude decreases exponentially with the distance x from the wave maker. The coefficient of x is the spatial coefficient of absorption. The relation between this coefficient and the kinematic coefficient of viscosity is derived directly for the case of a clean surface and a deep fluid. Some familiarity with Lamb's Hydrodynamics is necessary for the reading of the article.
