Abstract
The notable advance in recent years in the recognition and treatment of the uncertainty inherent in management problems has tended to have a curious backlash. Out of the new methodology has come, for many technicians and too many managers, a strange belief in the absolutism of the ultimate optimizing solutions. Computer facility has compounded the difficulty with its awesome black and white answers that intelligent humility would only call gray. Most parameters in the humanities are essentially the facts of yesterday; undue confidence in their predictive value calls for a reminder of man's fallibility in a world of uncertainty.
