Abstract

By using a Raman spectrometer system whose absolute sensitivity is calibrated, we have measured the absolute Raman scattering cross sections of trimethylgallium (TMG) and trimethylaluminum (TMA) in the vapor phase. The measured cross sections are (dσ/dΩ) gasTMG = 1.3 × 10 −29 cm 2/molecule sr line and (dσ/dΩ) gasTMA = 2.6 × 10 −29 cm 2/dimer sr line for the 2912 cm −1 line of TMG and the 2900 cm −1 line of TMA, respectively. From these cross sections we can deduce that the molecular vibrations of a monolayer of TMG or TMA on a GaAs substrate should be observable by Raman scattering.
