Abstract

THERE has been a number of reports recently on the determination of the absolute configuration of organic molecules using the anomalous dispersion of CuKα radiation by oxygen as heaviest atom in the crystal1–5. The determination is best performed by comparing the signs of observed Bijvoet intensity differences, illustration, with those calculated for the two enantiomers. A comparison of their magnitudes as well, however, yields an experimental value of the imaginary scattering factor, Δƒ″, of the anomalous scatterer. Parthasarathy6 was able to confirm the theoretical value of Δƒ″ for chlorine and CuKα radiation. Open image in new window
