Abstract

It is found that the Ex luminescence at 3.01 eV is absent in KI crystals grown from aqueous solution. This indicates that the Ex luminescence is extrinsic feature of KI and arises from the radiative annihilation of excitons localized near lattice imperfections. The Na + -related luminescence at 2.60 eV in RbI is also confirmed to be absent if the crystals are prepared from solution. The present work opens a way to study the self-trapping of excitons in KI and RbI without being disturbed by the influence of imperfection-related luminescence.
