Abstract

Complete serial sections of extraocular muscles from a quail, pigeon, English sparrow and canary were examined for the presence of muscle spindles. Oblique and rectus muscles of the eyeball, and the pyramidalis and quadratus muscles which activate the nictitating membrane were searched in each species. No spindles or other encapsulated endings were found, although such organs were easily detected in limb muscles from these birds.
