Abstract

Incidence and genetics of ear lobe type is reported among four endogamous groups from Maharashtra, India. All the 1367 subjects (682 males, 685 females) studied, showed free ear lobe type. The complete absence of attached ear lobe among the Nandiwallas is a unique finding—no other reported population in the world has shown absence of this phenotype. In 140 families of the mating type free × free, all 545 children had free ear lobes. It appears that the genetic factor for attached ear lobe has been lost in these groups due largely to genetic drift.
