Abstract

IT is well known that artificial radioactive substances originating from nuclear explosions may be used as tracers in studies of atmospheric circulation1 and ocean currents2. Other artificial environmental contaminants may be of use in this way. I have found that alkylbenzenesulphonates (ABS), widely-used components of domestic and industrial synthetic detergent, could be used as such a tracer for the geological study to estimate the rate of sedimentation in the coastal area of the sea.
