Abstract

The use of copper slag as fine aggregate in concrete construction will bring sustainability through the recycling of waste and conservation of natural resources. However, established research output is necessary to create confidence among the stakeholders and thereby start or improve the practical usage of such industrial waste in the construction industry. This paper investigates the effect of copper slag on abrasion and slake resistance of hardened concrete and the experimental results confirm that both of these two properties are significantly improved when copper slag is used as an alternative to natural sand in concrete making. Further, this paper proposed a generalized model to predict the abrasion and slake resistance of copper slag aggregate concrete in terms of easily measurable strength parameters. The proposed model can help as a quality control tool at the construction site.
