Abstract

This research studied the effect of increasing the strength of concrete surfaces by using concrete surface polishing with a lithium silicate coating. The abrasion resistance and resistance to sulfuric acid attack of concrete were studied. The performance of 4 concrete surfaces viz., untreated surface, a surface coated with lithium silicate, a polished surface without lithium silicate, and a polished surface with lithium silicate. In addition, the effect of lithium silicate contents was studied. The mechanical properties of the concrete after the treatments for 120 days were tested. The results showed that the concrete polished surface with a lithium silicate coating had significant increases in abrasion resistance and resistance to sulfuric acid attack. The increases in resistance increased with the amount of lithium silicate and the strength of the concrete.
