Abstract

Laboratory abrasion and erosion tests have been carried out on permanent moulded austempered ductile iron (PMADI) castings and the results compared with similar tests on sand cast austempered ductile iron. The effect of variation in silicon content in the range 2.4–3.4% was studied. Dry sand rubber wheel abrasion test results were used to judge abrasion resistance and jet erosion tests were conducted at different impact angles to evaluate erosion resistance. PMADI castings have been shown to possess better abrasion and erosion resistance than the sand moulded counterpart. Typical microstructural features observed in PMADI castings and their implications on abrasion and erosion resistance have been discussed.
