Abstract

Abstract Tomato hornworms and several thousand other insect species cause losses in excess of $1 billion annually to horticultural crops. Additional losses result from insects transmitting diseases. The $1 billion figure was estimated during the 1960's when a wide variety of potent insecticides were available. With the loss of more than $1 billion annually when insecticides were readily available, it is natural that all horticulturists are concerned about losses attributable to insects when many of our present insecticides will no longer be permitted in recent weeks at least 8 states have imposed restrictions on the use of DDT and other insecticides and this trend is likely to continue.
