Abstract

In 1976, an estimated 1.1 million abortions were performed in the United States.1 Some characteristics of the women undergoing abortion are shown in Table 1.2 Between 260,000 and 275,000 of these abortions were paid for under Title XIX (Medicaid) and Title XX (Social Services) of the Social Security Act.3 Eighty-five per cent of Medicaid-recipient women of childbearing age are mothers receiving assistance from AFDC (Aid for Dependent Children).3 It is these women who will be most directly affected by the Supreme Court ruling in June, 1977, allowing states to refuse to pay for abortions under Medicaid.
