Abstract

Definitions of abortion have been the same for generations; however, the application of terms is changing. Newer methodology and technology are lowering maternal mortality, but the incidence of induced abortion apparently is increasing. There is a strong movement to the enactment of more liberal abortion laws. The question is, “Will this alter the problem?” Nursing care is based on the assessment of need and application of scientific principles. The problems do not seem to be in the application of the manual skills of nursing, but in the supportive aspects of nursing. To be effective, nursing must be supportive — a blend of head, hand, and heart applied with understanding, skill, and judgment.
