Abstract

As legal abortion supplants illegal abortion the risks to life and health from abortion have declined. The risks from first trimester abortion are now less than those of carrying a pregnancy to term. Newer abortion technology puts less strain on hospital facilities than older programs as the emphasis on outpatient procedures increases. A self-administered nonsurgical procedure utilizing prostaglandins is now being studied. The need for psychosocial and motivational research into abortion-seeking behavior and unwanted pregnancy is needed.
