Abstract

Midwives have a rare opportunity to inform the debate on the reform of abortion law some forty years after the Abortion Act 1967 liberalized the law relating to the termination of pregnancy. Both pro choice and pro life groups are dissatisfied with the current law and have called for change. The pro life lobby is asking for a reduction in the time limit on abortion and a statutory cooling off period while pro choice lobbyists are demanding less regulation and increased choice for women by allowing health professionals, such as midwives, to terminate pregnancies.
