Abstract

(N Engl J Med. 2022;387:1537–1539) Improvement of racial equity in health care is a significant priority for research and policy, as disparity in outcomes is readily apparent. The landmark US Supreme Court ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health in June 2022 severely constrained access to abortion, a procedure considered an essential element of comprehensive reproductive care. The legal status of abortion impacts the civil rights of all with the capacity for pregnancy, but has strong reverberations in the Black and Indigenous populations of the United States, who have historically suffered from acute reproductive oppression. Abortion access is proposed as a racial justice issue that should be addressed by policymakers, health care organizations and clinicians.
