Obese patients were studied on three dietary programs—after diets containing 300 g or 180 g carbohydrate and after total caloric fasting lasting from 5 to 14 days. In obese patients above age 20 years, glucose tolerance was abnormal. Obese patients below 20 years demonstrate minimal impairment of carbohydrate tolerance, which is not statistically significant from normal tolerance tests. The mean plasma insulin level in obese patients before the tolerance tests was 29.5 µU/ml, reaching a maximum of 247.0 µU/ml 120 minutes after glucose administration,... This content is PDF only.
