Abstract

he urinalysis (UA) is one of the most commonly utilized tests in the emergency department (ED) (1). A UA may be ordered for patients with nonspecific symptoms such as vague abdominal pain or altered mental status (2). When these patients have a urinalysis demonstrating pyuria or bacteriuria, it may be interpreted as a urinary tract infection (UTI), when in reality, they simply have baseline pyuria or bacteriuria.
