Abstract

SUMMARY High-precision palaeomagnetic sampling and measurements of 1950 Mauna Loa lava flows (Hawaii) show, as noted by other workers, a significantly low inclination compared to the geomagnetic direction expected from available observatory data. Such ‘shallow’ inclinations appear related to the unusually high intensity of magnetization of the 1950 basalt, resulting in a high magnetic refraction for the lava flows considered. Other altered palaeomagnetic directions (both inclination and declination) on Kilauea 1972 flows possibly result from displacements during and/or after cooling. Erroneous palaeomagnetic direction imprints do not appear to be the rule.
