Abstract

Endometrial biopsies from 35 women with primary infertility were analyzed for activity of aspartate aminotransferase lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) hexokinase malate dehydrogenase isocitrate dehydrogenase pyruvate kinase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD). LDH aspartate aminotransferase and hexokinase showed no significant abnormal activity. 25 of the 35 patients showed abnormal activity in at least 1enzyme; malate dehydrogenase and isocitrate dehydrogenase levels were markedly increased in 6 and 13 patients respectively and pyruvate kinase and G-6-PD were markedly reduced in 23 and 8 women respectively. The low activity of G-6-PD and pyruvate kinase was most marked in the secretory phase. It is concluded that some women with primary infertility have defective carbohydrate metabolism in their endometria.
