Abstract

We describe a novel new technique for the treatment of axial low back pain by ablatement of intraosseous nerves within the vertebral body. A prospective clinical series of 16 patients is presented. The rationale for this new treatment method rests on the now well documented network of abundant, substance P containing intraosseous nerves that enter the vertebral body via the large Basivertebral foramen. The Basivertebral foramen is consistently present at the posterior midline of all human thoracic and lumbar vertebrae.
