Abstract

Collateral vessel formation, a normal response to artery occlusion, is impaired in patients with diabetes, rendering the tissue downstream more susceptible to critical ischemia. Thus, understanding of the mechanisms induced by diabetes on reduced collateral vessel formation may offer new therapeutic perspectives to prevent amputation. Our laboratory has discovered that diabetes decreased the expression of DUSP4, which was associated with elevated inflammation and vascular dysfunction.
