Abstract

This chapter talks about Abijah Beckwith, who represented Herkimer County as a member of the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate. It analyzes Beckwith's letter addressed to his grandson in 1847, which reflected on his political career. It features a selection from Beckwith's letter, wherein he proudly related his experiences as a public servant and explained his votes on key issues and the electoral consequences. The chapter points out how his political career exemplifies how democratization opened political doors for men with little formal education or personal wealth. It explores the construction of the Erie and Champlain Canals, which was one of the laws that Beckwith voted to pass and was censured by his constituents.
