Abstract

Aberrant internal carotid artery is a rare vascular anomaly of the temporal bone. The differential diagnosis must be done with glomus tumor and other vascular malformations. We present a case of aberrant internal carotid artery in a young woman with a nonpulsatile tinnitus and normal hearing. A blue-reddish mass behind the tympanic membrane was disclosed; the diagnosis of glomus tumor was suspected. CT scan, MRI, and angiography showed an aberrant internal carotid artery. A correct diagnosis is important. A misinterpretation may lead to a surgical treatment with fatal complications.
