Abstract

Improvements in image quality, and relative decreases in equipment cost, make ultrasonography an imaging modality that should be widely used in first opinion small animal practice. This article briefly describes the transducers that are commonly used for small animal abdominal ultrasonography, outlining the advantages, limitations and main applications of each. As ultrasound is a ‘real time’ modality, ways are described in which the operator can maximise image quality during a scan. The utility of ultrasound for evaluating the main abdominal organ systems is summarised, together with clinical examples where an ultrasound examination can be of significant value in the diagnostic work-up of a case.
