Abstract

The Association of Boards of Certification (ABC) of Operating Personnel in Water and Wastewater Utilities undertook a study of various operator classification proposals. This article presents the results of the study. The ABC classification system was adopted June 1974. Under this system, facility classification recommendations are Water Treatment Plant (WT), Water Distribution System (WD), Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWT), and Wastewater Collection System (WWC). Also recommended were qualifications for personnel corresponding to the facility classes previously listed. An important addition is an entry‐level grade of operator‐in‐training or OIT. For the operator this means more standardization between certification programs, reciprocity among state programs, higher standards and qualifications, more emphasis on the career ladder concept, certification of more than one individual at one plant. At different levels in large plants, technical specialty certification will be adopted by advanced programs.
