Abstract

Language is continually evolving. Words are added, frequently from disciplines of science and technology, and other words are dropped. Words experience a change in meaning; “bad” in some cultures depicts something of value or with admirable qualities, and “gay” has connotations not originally intended. The “slanguage” of the Internet and texting has accelerated incorporation of abbreviations and acronyms into the vernacular. While the Journal recognizes this trend, we want to avert an alphabet soup of acronyms that may be difficult for a diverse readership to interpret.
