Abstract

Abaritanus must not be put in relation with the name of the Aures (Άύράσιον in Procopius). To expUin it by the berber tongue is not necessary. A better explanation is the Semitic root cbr, « to go beyond ». The concept of« beyond » is not without instances in geographic terms of ancient North Africa : cf. Babaris Transtagnensibus (CIL, VIII, 9324), Transcellensis mons (Ammianus Marcellinus, XXIX, 5, 20). The Abantaría, provincia is "the province which is beyond" (a river, a mountain, or some limit).
