Abstract

Action potential (AP) alternans is an unstable rhythm associated with arrhythmia vulnerability. Dual-camera optical studies to record APs and intracellular calcium (Ca) suggest that Ca alternation is related to AP alternans. Those studies were limited to recordings from epicardium or from a transmural cut. We developed a technique to record AP and Ca signals simultaneously with optical fibers in the myocardium to determine the three-dimensional spatial complexities of AP and Ca alternans in intact tissue.
