AAN Member Spotlight: Educating for leadership: An outreach approach

Abstract

Sharon Weinstein, MS, CRNI, RN, FAAN is President, Global Education Development Institute (GEDI), a not-for-profit (NFP) educational initiative aimed at enhancing nurses’ clinical and leadership skills. She has directed nursing programs and facilitated the charter of successful nursing associations in many developing nations.Ms. Weinstein has a record of success in developing a cadre of nurse leaders for health ministries, tertiary-care hospitals, primary-care clinics, and nursing associations in the New Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. As course-director and faculty, she has created a curriculum and teaching methodology to address the skills necessary to more effectively lead in today’s global healthcare environment. The Global Education Development Institute NFP, founded in 2001, offers concrete, actionable programs to develop new and more cost-effective approaches to administration, and collaboration for strong teaching-learning experiences. The integration of new information and communication technologies in academic and administrative areas will facilitate the creation of a collaborative work environment for nurse colleagues. Since its inception, GEDI has provided programs in Russia, Italy, and Armenia. Academy Fellows Weinstein and Ann Marie T. Brooks recently presented a 2-day session for nurses affiliated with the Novgorod Alliance (Russia) in October 2004.One of Ms. Weinstein’s most outstanding contributions to nursing has been her leadership in building capacity, improving care, and providing sustained growth and vision for nursing throughout the NIS of the former Soviet Union and CEE countries. She has served as Chair and Director of the Infusion Nurses Certification Corporation Board of Directors, past President of the Infusion Nurses Society, and Director of the nursing initiative for the NIS of the former Soviet Union and CEE countries. Ms. Weinstein is also a US and international Magnet appraiser for the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a member of the Region 5 Coordinating Council and Governance Council for Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), and a member of American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE).Creating an infrastructure for developing nursing associations and empowering nurse leaders has a significant impact on health policy. As a result of this initiative, the Chief Nurse of the Health Ministry position has been approved in several NIS/CEE countries. Those currently holding the positions are graduates of the leadership institute.The initiative has included several Academy fellows, including Drs. Ann Marie T. Brooks and Vicki George. Future programs will require input from nurse leaders from diverse backgrounds.
