Abstract

Plans were announced last week for a new electronic journal that may well be a harbinger of on-line scientific publishing. The Online Journal of Current Clinical Trials , a medical journal to be launched next April, is being developed jointly by American Association for Advancement of Science and Online Computer Library-Center Inc., a nonprofit computer library service and research organization in Dublin, Ohio. It will be the nation's first peerreviewed science journal to be disseminated by computer, notes AAAS executive officer Richard S. Nicholson, and first to display typeset-quality text, charts, and line graphics. The editor is Edward J. Huth, former editor of Annals of Internal Medicine. A major advantage of electronic format is that it will permit publication of new studies within 24 hours of their peer-reviewed acceptance, eliminating usual delay of weeks or months between acceptance and publication.
