Abstract

In the UK, over 80% of bariatric surgical patients are female and of reproductive age. Weight-loss following bariatric surgery may improve fertility placing these women at risk of an unplanned pregnancy. There is little published on the effects of surgically-imposed rapid weight loss and potential nutrient deficiencies for the mother and baby. As such, current guidelines recommend avoiding pregnancy for up to 24 months after bariatric surgery, although there is no consensus on the timeframe. Effective contraceptive care is therefore an important issue in the context of bariatric surgery given the patient demographics. Contraception is provided by a wide range of practitioners and settings in the UK, but little is known about current practices for this group of patients. The aim of the surveys was to understand the contraceptive knowledge and provision by both bariatric surgical teams and contraceptive providers in the UK.
