Abstract

Obesity (Body Mass Index >= 30kg/m2) represents a staggering public health concern, affecting nearly 78 million adults in the United States and is linked to some of the leading causes of death such as heart disease and diabetes. The prevalence of obesity, and number of total joint arthroplasty (TJA) being performed in the US each year are increasing. About 60% of patients who had joint arthroplasty in 2014 were female. While obesity as a risk factor for post-operative complications after TJA has been studied extensively, there is a need for further investigation on the impact of obesity on the outcomes of TJA among women.
