Abstract

In this study, the wavelet-based Motion-JPEG2000, the next generation motion picture compression technique was applied to PIV for efficiently reducing the physical storage. For evaluating the relationship between image parameter and compression ratio, the experimented PIV images were compressed by Motion-JPEG2000 and Motion-JPEG. The superior performance of Motion-JPEG2000 is found as compared to Motion-JPEG at any compression ratio. Motion-JPEG2000 method performs beyond compression ratios where Motion-JPEG breaks down, enabling compression of high-resolution PIV images.
