Abstract

Background: Approximately 20-30% of patients who undergo bariatric surgery experience suboptimal weight loss or significant weight regain, within the first few postoperative years. Preoperative psychosocial functioning, in particular mood and binge eating disorder, may contribute to suboptimal weight losses. Both conditions share the common psychological construct of impulsivity, which may impact the long-term results of bariatric surgery.
