Abstract

Objectives : To determine the prevalence of essential hypertension (ET) in rural setting Sri Lanka Methods : A descriptive cross sectional study carried out in a temple of rural village in Sri Lanka. Interviewer based questionnaire was used in data collection. Results: 255 participants were participated for the study. Mean age was 59.2 years. Female predominance was observed (Male: Female = 1:4). 5.5% already diagnosed with ET and was on treatment. 4.7% of total studied population had ET. Elevated blood pressure was recorded in 21 participants who was previously healthy. A individual had systolic blood pressure more than 180mmHg. Intake of high amount of fat was significantly associated (Z = 5.92) with ET but not with vegetables, fruits, salt and sugar ingestion. Conclusion: ET is not uncommon in rural setting of Sri Lanka anymore. The community needs to be educated and screened in order to prevent life threatening complications.
