Abstract

Heat Shock Proteins (HSP) are a family of cardioprotective, intracellular proteins; however, some studies suggest that HSP60 can be a danger signal for toll-like receptors (TLR). We hypothesized that extracellular HSP60 binds to a cell surface receptor, possibly TLR2 or TLR4, on cardiac myocytes and induces apoptosis.
