Abstract

The consensus statement recommend earlier assessment in high risk populations, including Māori and Pacific. Inclusion of a younger eligible population presents a challenge, given infrequent engagement of this age demographic with primary care. The Heart Foundation piloted a consumer CVD risk tool to understand if this would provide opportunities to improving heart health in difficult to reach populations The tool was informed by PREDICT equations specifically designed to calculate risk for Māori and low socioeconomic populations. To access an at risk population we partnered with Ng ā tiPorou Hauora, in Tairāwhiti, and an industrial occupational health clinic in Hawkes Bay. A qualitative survey was performed to augment quantitative findings. 107 checks were completed 44 community,63 workplace. 61% Māori. Workplace participants were more likely to be younger and at lower risk by virtue of age alone but had important life-course risk. The tool initiated conversations on modifiable risk with over 80% of the participants committed to lifestyle change. The consumer tool enabled conversations around heart health with high risk populations that may not have occurred otherwise.
