Abstract

A 27-year-old white woman was admitted to our hospital in August, 2002, 12 h after the sudden onset of vomiting, epigastric pain, and fever. She reported that she had been in good health until the symptoms started. On examination she had petechiae on her nose, and peripheral cyanosis, but we found no other skin lesions, and she had no signs of meningeal irritation. She gave no history of trauma, or haematological disorders, and had no cardiac murmurs. She was febrile, tachycardic, and hypotensive.
