Abstract

Working through the examples of eighteenth-century writers Goethe and Cao Xueqin, the novelist Mo Yan discusses art and literature in relation to an author's personal life and historical context in order to illuminate the way national literatures transcend their historical specificity without losing the distinctive qualities that make each instance of “world literature” unique. This speech was given at the opening ceremony of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2009.
