Abstract

The journal excerpts included in this article are one woman's attempt to integrate the professional, personal, and political during a time of war and international crisis. How to make sense of our institutions as an American and a woman living in a patriarchal system preoccupies the author along with her work as a family therapist. We all choose the backdrop for making sense of life and death, and for the author the threat of nuclear war has provided the context for her search. When the Gulf War broke out in January 1991, her normally intellectual and rational self called for a more confessional mode of expression.
