Abstract

ABSTRACT In January 2001, The University of Akron began a campus-wide wireless laptop initiative. The first phase of the initiative included a pilot project in which 350 IBM ThinkPad laptops were distributed to several university departments and organizations. Bierce Library received 60 of the laptops to lend to students for use in the library and currently circulates 150 of these computers. This article describes the challenges and rewards of planning, implementing, and maintaining a laptop-lending program in an academic library environment.
